Ukim is a partner in the Erasmus+ project "Save Life": Innovative digital training materials for first aid and advanced life support.
The Erasmus project 'Save Life: Reorganizing Basic/Advanced Life Support Training Through the Use of Innovative Digital Materials', which we have been running for the past two years, is entering its final phase, but its significance and impact will continue to be felt in the years to come. This project is funded by the European Union, under the Erasmus+ KA220 programme, and aims to revolutionise the training methods in Basic and Advanced Life Support (B/ALS) by providing digital resources and innovative training materials.
The University 'St. Cyril and Methodius' in Skopje, through its staff from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, is an active partner in this project, contributing its expertise and knowledge. The Faculty of Medicine assisted in the development of educational materials and training for medical personnel, while the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering focused on the design of interactive digital tools and resources.
The aim of the "Save Life" project is to address important challenges related to providing first aid and protecting human life. Given that cardiovascular diseases, particularly acute coronary syndromes, are the leading causes of mortality worldwide, timely and effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is crucial for improving patient survival rates. The project addressed this need by creating a digital platform offering flexible and continuous training for B/ALS, which is particularly important given the frequent updates to CPR guidelines and disruptions caused by events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project consortium brought together the efforts of eight partner institutions from six different countries: Yildiz Technical University (Turkey) – coordinator; University of Health Sciences (Turkey); Medical University Sofia (Bulgaria), Panepistimio Thessalias (Greece), Bukovinian State Medical University (Ukraine), Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (Republic of North Macedonia), Silesian University of Technology (Poland), RQ Consultancy Ltd. Co. (Turkey).
One of the most significant benefits of the project is the development of specialised courses and digital training materials. These resources are aimed at university staff, medical students, nurses, paramedics and doctors who work or will work in high-risk environments. Through interactive videos, e-books and tools for online and hybrid training, the project makes these materials easily accessible to medical personnel from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
Within the project, we successfully organised several Learning, Teaching, and Training (LTT) events, which served as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and the strengthening of teaching staff capacity. Additionally, multiplier events were organised, aimed at disseminating the project's results and presenting them to a wider audience. These events not only enabled the spread of knowledge but also fostered collaboration and the exchange of good practices among different institutions and professionals.
The project has the potential for a long-term impact on the quality of emergency medical training across Europe. By providing free and open access to B/ALS materials, the project contributes to increased preparedness and efficiency of healthcare professionals in handling emergencies, thereby directly saving lives.
