Welcome Guide for Foreign Students

Dear student,

On behalf of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University and the City of Skopje, we would like to welcome you and thank you for considering our University as a host for your student exchange.

This Guide has been specially designed for foreign students who intend to study temporarily at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. Here you will find some necessary and practical information that will help you prepare for your period of study abroad and will be useful to you in your first days in Skopje.

General information on SS. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje

International strategy
Ss. Cyril and Methodius University was founded in 1949 and today comprises 23 faculties and 5 research institutes. The language of instruction is Macedonian, although some courses are taught in minority languages and in English for certain postgraduate courses. The University organises postgraduate studies in over 150 disciplines. The University has around 50,000 enrolled students across all study cycles.

Ss. Cyril and Methodius University is actively following the Bologna Process, fully accepting the Bologna Declaration as its strategy with the following priorities:

  • Development and securing the academic autonomy
    • Full implementation of the European Credit Transfer System
    • Harmonisation and compatibility of the study programmes with the EU model of university
    • System of quality assurance with evaluation and accreditation of higher education institutions and study programmes
    • Student and academic staff mobility
    • Competitiveness at home and abroad


Levels of study programmes offered

  • B.A. – duration of studies: three years, including 180 credits.
  • M.A. - Duration of studies: two years, including 120 credits (a total of 300 credits combined with the first cycle of studies).
  • PhD – duration of studies: three years, including 180 credits.

ECTS – European Credit Transfer System

1 ECTS credit is equivalent to approximately 30 working hours. The annual workload is 60 ECTS credits.

Enrolment Procedure and Selection of Courses
Before your arrival, you need to arrange your Learning Agreement with the ECTS coordinator at your home institution. The IRO officer and/or the ECTS coordinator at the faculty of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje will assist you with the enrolment procedure once you arrive.

The International Relations Office at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje is located in the Rectorate building (Address: Blvd. Goce Delcev, No.9, 1000 Skopje). The Office provides assistance to incoming students regarding admission, counselling and related information. Upon arrival, all incoming students should visit the IRO (working hours: Monday–Friday from 8 am to 4 pm).

Macedonian Language Course
Macedonian is the official language of instruction at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje and the majority of the courses are taught in Macedonian. For incoming students who have no knowledge of the Macedonian language, the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje organises language classes that are free of charge and last from 3 to 6 months (this is a non-credit programme). The teaching is carried out by the Faculty of Philology in Skopje.

University Hall of Residence
There is a limited number of beds on the University premises for exchange students. The International Relations Office will assist with accommodation on the University premises.

Erasmus+ students can apply for a bed in the University Residence Hall, which offers accommodation in studio flats. The price is around €275–310 per person per month.

After receiving the Information and Invitation letter from the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, please return the request form for housing.

The University does not guarantee a place in the University Residence Hall.

Private accommodation
The IRO office does not provide assistance in finding private accommodation; however, we can direct you to the websites of some real estate agencies in the Republic of North Macedonia, which will assist you in finding the most suitable accommodation according to your preferences. Skopje, the cultural centre of the Republic of North Macedonia, is a beautiful and modern city with a population of around 800,000. The city and its surroundings have numerous cultural and historical monuments that attract the attention of every visitor.

Bank account

Every foreign citizen is entitled to open a non-resident bank account at a bank in the Republic of North Macedonia. This can only be done in person, with a valid passport.

Visa and Residence Permit
Before coming to the Republic of North Macedonia as a student, you are required to obtain a visa.

The documents required for obtaining a visa must be taken to the nearest consulate or Embassy of the Republic of North Macedonia. (the list of consulates and embassies is available at: www.mfa.gov.mk).

Upon arrival in Skopje, students are required to apply for a residence permit, issued by the local administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Health Insurance
All foreign students are advised to purchase general insurance before departing for the Republic of North Macedonia. It is also a general recommendation for everyone to contact the International Relations Office at their home universities for more information.


Arrival in Skopje

Airports:
Skopje has one international airport located about 22 kilometres east of the city centre, which connects the city with many European cities. There is no bus service from the airport to the city, but taxis run frequently from the airport to the city. The price for a taxi to or from the airport is about 15 euros.

Railways:
Skopje Central Railway Station is approximately 2 kilometres east of the city centre. It connects Skopje with other major cities in the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as cities across the Balkans.

Taxis and Buses:
Skopje Central Bus Station, located next to the Central Railway Station, is 2 kilometres east of the city centre. There are bus routes operating between major European cities and Skopje. There are also bus routes throughout the city, connecting different areas; the average price for a ticket is 30 denars or about €0.50. Taxis also run throughout the city.
