Vice-Rectors Vice-Rector for International Cooperation

Professor Dr Aleksandar Skeparovski was born on 21 April 1971 in Šibenik, Republic of Croatia. He completed his primary and secondary education in Skopje.

He graduated in applied physics from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University "St. Cyril and Methodius" in Skopje in 1998, where he subsequently completed his postgraduate studies in condensed matter physics. He obtained his master's degree in 2005.

In 2007 he submitted his doctoral thesis entitled "Electrical and Dielectric Properties of Ultra-thin Ta2O5:Ti Films", and in 2011 he defended it at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, thereby earning the degree of Doctor of Physical Sciences.

He has been employed at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje since 1999. He began as a professional associate, and was subsequently elected to all associate and academic teaching and research positions, culminating in his election to the rank of full professor in 2021.

He is involved in teaching at all three cycles of physics studies. At the first cycle, undergraduate studies, he teaches the subjects Mechanics and Solid State Physics, while at the second cycle, Master's and Doctoral studies, where he is also an accredited supervisor, he teaches several specialised courses in the field of Condensed Matter Physics.

Within his teaching and research practice to date, Professor Dr Skepárovski has undertaken around 15 study and research stays at universities and scientific institutions in France, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and others. He collaborates with researchers from several countries, and has a long-standing, intensive collaboration with one research group from the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and another from the Department of Physics at the University of York, England. He is a member of the Research Centre for Environment and Materials at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The main area of scientific interest of Prof. Dr Aleksandar Skeparovski is thin insulating films for application in microelectronics, including the methods for their deposition, experimental techniques for the characterisation of electrical properties and the modelling of transport processes. He also works on thin films with magnetic properties, as well as on organic conductors.

He has worked on ten national and international research projects and has participated as a plenary or invited speaker at more than 25 scientific gatherings (conferences, workshops, schools, etc.). He has published around 30 scientific and 10 professional papers.

He has been an active member of the Society of Physicists of the Republic of Macedonia since 1999, where he has held several positions, including treasurer of the Society, member of the Board of Directors, and chairman of the Commission for the preparation of problems for physics competitions. He has also participated in a number of activities related to the popularisation of physics, as well as in the preparation of our students for the International Physics Olympiads.

From 2011 to 2015, he was coordinator for all six study programmes at the Institute of Physics, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, in Skopje. He participated in the work of various committees and working groups, including the Commission for Self-Evaluation of UCM. In September 2016, he was elected Head of the Institute of Physics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and in October 2020, he was re-elected to the same position. From February 2021, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He remained in this position until his appointment as Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at the University 'St. Cyril and Methodius' in Skopje in October 2023.
