The introduction of the third cycle – doctoral studies, as a genuine form of study, represents one of the most significant reforms in higher education in the Republic of North Macedonia, and, consequently, at the University 'St. Cyril and Methodius' in Skopje.

The established model of doctoral studies at UKIМ is modelled on that of developed European universities, with the concept of organising doctoral studies within a School of Doctoral Studies, as one of the fundamental characteristics of the University's integrative activity.

Doctoral studies last three years, during which 180 ECTS credits are earned.

The study programmes consist of:

1. Research training, amounting to 30 ECTS credits;
2. education, which amounts to 30 ECTS credits;
3. Registration, preparation and defence of the doctoral dissertation, which amounts to 120 ECTS credits.

Research training includes:

• – three subjects for acquiring generic knowledge and skills for research, amounting to 12 ECTS credits (all subjects in this group are worth 4 credits), namely: the course Research Ethics, one course from the Research Methodology group of courses and one more course from the list of other courses offered for research training, which, on the proposal of the study programme holders, is approved by the University's Academic Council for Doctoral Studies;
• – Doctoral seminars, conferences and workshops in research practice, amounting to 18 ECTS credits.

Education Covers subjects from the field, area and sub-area of research, amounting to 30 ECTS credits.

The official opening and the work of the University's School of Doctoral Studies, The third cycle research training – doctoral studies – was marked by the first lecture, entitled 'The University, Science and Ethics – Concept and Practice at the University 'St. Cyril and Methodius' in Skopje', delivered by the Rector, Prof. Dr Velimir Stojkovski.
This significant event was held on 1 December 2011 in the large amphitheatre of the Faculty of Philosophy, in the presence of the first enrolled candidates, the management of UKI, deans of the faculties, directors of the scientific institutes, heads of third-cycle study programmes, academic and research staff, University employees, representatives of the media, and the Minister for Education and Science, Mr Panche Kralev, also addressed the audience.
