The Faculty of Fine Arts and Fontys Academy with a Joint Workshop on Artistic Research

On November 24, at the Faculty of Fine Arts – Skopje, a lecture and a specialized workshop were held, led by professor Falk Hübner and researcher Helen de Hoon from the Fontys Academy of the Arts (Fontys Academy of the Arts) in the Netherlands

The workshop aimed to present the fundamental principles of artistic research and to introduce participants to the first practical steps in its application. It was intended for art students, active artists, and artist-educators from all fields and experience levels who wish to deepen their knowledge and explore the role of the artist as a researcher.

The event took place in the library and lecture hall of the Faculty of Fine Arts, at the “Pedagoška”. During the workshop, participants went through a mini-cycle of artistic research, exploring the stages of formulating a research question, defining a method, designing an experiment, and presenting results. Through this process, they examined the transition from artist as practitioner to artist as researcher—learning how to transform initial curiosity into a clear and well-founded research question, and how to develop an appropriate methodological approach.

The workshop concluded with short presentations in which participants shared their artistic and performative outcomes. The event was based on the latest open-access publication by Falk Hübner, “Method, Methodology and Research Design in Artistic Research: Between Solid Routes and Emergent Pathways,” as well as on methodological approaches developed within the master’s program Performing Public Space and the research group Artistic Connective Practices at the Fontys Academy.
