Deepening of scientific and research cooperation – a meeting was held with a delegation from the University of Michigan, USA
On Monday, 30 March 2026, Rector Prof. Dr Biljana Angelova received the delegation from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Michigan, USA, led by Prof. Dr Zhaneta Nikolovska-Choleska, Pro-Dean for Postgraduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
The Professor was accompanied by Prof. Dr Andrew P. Lieberman, Director of Neuropathology; Prof. Dr J. Chad Brenner, Director of the Doctoral Study Programme in Cell and Molecular Biology; Prof. Dr Sethu Pichiyay, Deputy Director of the Doctoral Study Programme in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Also present at the meeting were the Rectors of UKIM, Prof. Valentina Gechevska, Prof. Sonja Topuzovska and Prof. Aleksandar Skeparovski, as well as the Pro-Dean for International Cooperation of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Rubens Jovanovic.
At the meeting, the Rector emphasised UKiM's commitment to advancing international scientific and research cooperation, with a special emphasis on the mobility of students and academic staff, as well as the development of doctoral studies, as a key segment for positioning the University in the European and global academic space.
In the context of the recently signed Agreement on the Stay of Visiting Researchers, the two parties discussed its specific implementation. The first phase envisages three-month research stays for PhD candidates from UКИМ at the University of Michigan.
Prof. Dr. Zhaneta Nikolovska-Choleska, who is also an alumna of UKI emphasised her commitment to advancing cooperation and noted that there is significant interest from the academic staff of the University of Michigan Medical School in involving PhD students from UKI in their research projects.
The meeting was part of the wider programme of the visit by the University of Michigan delegation, which included a joint symposium with the Faculty of Medicine at UKI and working meetings with the faculty's leadership and academic staff to identify specific areas for scientific research cooperation.
This meeting lays a solid foundation for a long-term, strategic partnership aimed at advancing doctoral studies and scientific excellence at UKI M.
