The Institute for Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IEEIS) marked 60 years since its foundation.
On 27 May 2025, the Institute for Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IEEIS) at the University 'St. Cyril and Methodius' in Skopje celebrated its 60th anniversary – a significant anniversary for an institution that represents a symbol of engineering and scientific excellence, not only in the Republic of North Macedonia but also internationally.
Founded in 1965 in response to the catastrophic Skopje earthquake of 1963, IZIS has developed over the decades into a leading regional centre for research, development and education in the fields of seismology, earthquake engineering and disaster management. Today, the Institute is a respected partner and coordinator of numerous international projects, recognised for its scientific expertise and strategic support at national and global levels.
On this occasion, a ceremonial academy was organised, the jubilee monograph '60 Years of IZIIS' and the 'Compendium Publication' with an overview of master's and doctoral theses were launched, as well as a documentary film depicting the role and development of the Institute over time. A special highlight of the jubilee celebration was the visit of the world-renowned Professor Kyriacos Pittakakis, the current Vice-President of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering, who the following day delivered a professional lecture on a topic in the field of earthquake engineering in the Rector's Hall.
This jubilee serves as a reminder of the historical mission of IZIIS – to build a resilient society through knowledge, innovation and the education of future generations of engineers and scientists.
