The 26th of July – Frank Munning Award
After the catastrophic earthquake of 1963, among the many countries, organizations, and individuals who provided aid to Skopje was Frank Harcourt Munning, a philanthropist from London, United Kingdom. In doing so, he expressed his love and dedication to the city of Skopje. During his stay in Skopje in 1977, Frank Munning expressed his wish to annually award prizes to the best final-year students in the fields of architecture, social sciences, and the arts at our University. His wish was realized on June 30th, 1980, when the University Assembly made a decision to establish an award named the 26th of July – Frank Munning Award.
The first awards were presented on July 18, 1980, to the top students from the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Philosophy. In 1983, during his visit to Skopje to mark the 20th anniversary of the devastating earthquake, the founder of the award fund, Frank Harcourt Munning, visited the University and personally attended the award ceremony. The 26th of July Award, in accordance with the wishes of the donor Frank Harcourt Munning – an honorary citizen of the city of Skopje and the founder of the award fund – is presented each academic year to the best students in the fields of architecture, social sciences, and the arts at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. The act of presenting this award is symbolically linked to the history of the city of Skopje and the tragic, catastrophic earthquake of July 26th, 1963. |
