High electricity bills – a challenge for UGJK – meeting between the Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, Sanja Bozinovska, and the Rector of UGJK, Biljana Angelova
The Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, Sanja Bozinovska, held a working meeting with the Rector of the University 'St. Cyril and Methodius' in Skopje, Prof. Dr Biljana Angelova. The meeting covered several topics of mutual interest, with a focus on energy efficiency, cooperation between the Ministry and the University, and opportunities to support young talent.
Rector Angelova emphasised the importance of energy stability for the university's regular operations, noting that high electricity bills represent a significant financial burden. She pointed out that the university is seeking ways to optimise its electricity costs, as well as a long-term and sustainable solution.
Although Macedonia has been successfully managing its electricity exchange for more than a year and a half, which operates through the national Electricity Market Operator (MEMO), most state and public institutions, including schools, hospitals and municipal utilities, are facing serious challenges. These institutions are obliged to purchase electricity on the free market, paying the prices that are set on the HUPEX exchange in Hungary.
Although they are non-commercial entities, over 200 public institutions are currently paying the average daily market price for electricity, which significantly strains their budgets.
Minister Bozinovska stressed the Ministry's readiness to consider options for alleviating this situation, The Minister emphasised that resolving this issue is essential for improving the energy sustainability of the public sector and for freeing up funds that could be invested in other development projects.
The Minister and the Rector also discussed the importance of encouraging students and creating conditions that will motivate young and promising talent. Minister Bozinovska emphasised that the development and support of young people are among the Ministry's key priorities, and that she is prepared to initiate and support joint projects with the University which will contribute to the development of new talent and the provision of skilled personnel in the energy sector.
The Ministry of Energy remains committed to finding sustainable solutions to optimise energy resources and ensure economic stability for institutions and citizens.
