Address by Rector Prof. Dr Biljana Angelova to the central subject of UGJK – the students, on the occasion of the International Students' Day

Dear students,
Today we gather to celebrate International Students' Day, a day dedicated to recognising the invaluable contributions of students around the world and to reaffirming the importance of education in shaping the future.
This day, celebrated every year on 17 November, carries a powerful history. It commemorates the courage and sacrifice of the students who in 1939 resisted the oppression during the Nazi occupation of Prague. Their pursuit of justice, equality and academic freedom reminds us of the restless spirit of young people as catalysts for change and progress.
Today, International Students' Day transcends its historical roots to honour all students around the world. On this day, we emphasise the diversity, resilience and shared aspirations of individuals who strive for knowledge, often facing difficulties.
You embody the spirit of this day in your own way. You leave the familiar behind, embrace new cultures and tackle challenges to broaden your horizons. Your journeys are not merely academic; they are stories of courage, adaptation and growth. You enrich our communities with your perspectives and teach us the value of collaboration in a world that thrives on interconnectedness.
This day also serves as a reminder of the importance of equal access to education. Education is a fundamental right and a powerful tool for bridging divides, uplifting communities and fostering peace. However, millions of students globally still face barriers to learning. Let us commit to advocating for systems that empower every student, regardless of their circumstances.
Dear students, you are the architects of tomorrow. You are the future. Your determination, curiosity, determination for knowledge, your dreams and expectations inspire hope for the future. Keep learning, be curious – explore, be hungry for knowledge and keep growing. Never underestimate the power of your voice and your actions.
Thank you
